Capixyl… what is it and is it a good ingredient to add to a shampoo formula?
Posted by mattd9159 on April 27, 2020 at 2:26 amI have been doing some research on capixyl and I want to get some insight on what exactly it does and is it an ingredient i should add to my shampoo formula? Any information would be great

If you’re going to add it to your shampoo, only put it in for marketing (0.001%). Shampoo is meant to rinse-off, putting actives in there will just go to waste.
Personally I doubt the ingredient does much. The supplier’s study doesn’t look that great and they were the ones with the most motivation to make it look good!

The supplier claims it does this…
“Capixyl™ is an innovative and unique active complex designed to prevent and stop the hair loss process, stimulate hair growth and reduces inflammation in the scalp. Capixyl™ is a biomimetic signal peptide (acetyl tetrapeptide-3) combined with a red clover extract rich in Biochanin A, working synergistically on DHT modulation via the inhibition of 5-α reductase and on the stimulation of ECM renewal and anchoring proteins.”
But I agree with @EVchem - this is a claims ingredient and you shouldn’t expect that it will work to stop hair loss, especially delivered from a shampoo.
Incidentally, if it did work to stop hair loss and stimulate hair growth, it would be an illegal drug.

If you want a peptide to show any skin penetration, you have to apply it with a special formulation or a fancy injector device. Example reading HERE.Biochanin A is an isoflavone with weak oestrogenic activity (used in menopause instead of hormone substitution) and possible cancer preventive action (did test related compounds during my postdoc). Apart from a hypothetical ‘feminising’ effect, I don’t know of any reason why red clover or its constituents should help against hair loss.

Would it make more sense to put it in a leave in hair spray or is there really no benefit to this compound. What would be the best way to deliver it in a product?
