  • Can someone please help me with my deep conditioner formula?

Posted by onedust111 on April 29, 2022 at 12:37 am

So sorry for the long post in advance, but I hope someone can help me.  :'(

    • I’m having trouble creating SLIP in my deep conditioner. The frustrating part about it, is that it has slip in the water phase, but once I add the oil phase, the “slip disappears”. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. I’m trying to create a water-based conditioner similar to Alikay Naturals “Honey and Sage Deep Conditioner”

This is the most recent and last formula I’ve used:

    Water Phase:

Marshmallow root & Slippery Elm Bark Extract (infused with distilled water and herbs) — 71%

    Glycerine — 3%

    Panthenol — 1%

    Oil Phase:

    Grapeseed Oil — 2%

    Sweet Almond Oil — 2%

    Camellia Sinensis — 2%

    BTMS-50 —6%

    Cetyl Alcohol —4%

    Cool down:

    Sorbic Acid —1%

    Vitamin E Oil —1%

    Rosemary Oil —1%

    Fragrance Oil —1%

    • First off, the herb extract has EXTREME slip on its own. Google it if you don’t believe me lol. When I created the formula, I assumed since the extract has that much slip on its own, the final product will have slip. I was wrong. I seen something online where someone added their herb extract to the cool down phase. Should I be doing that?

This is the new formula I will be trying:

    Water Phase:

Marshmallow root & Slippery Elm Bark Extract — 73%

    Honeyquat —3%

    Panthenol —1%

    Oil Phase:

    Jojoba Oil —2.5%

    Grape-seed —1%

    Camellia Sinensis—1%

    BTMS-25 —6%

    Cetearyl alcohol —4%

    Cool Down:

    Sorbic Acid —1%

    Cetrimonium Chloride —2%

    Propanediol 1,3 (Naturesilk)—4%

    Vitamin E Oil —0.7%

    Rosemary Oil —0.5%

    Fragrance Oil —0.3%

    • Do you think this new formula will have slip? I’m confused as to why the slip disappeared once I added the oil phase in my last formula?

    hi there

If Slip means Conditioning your second Formulation will be Preforming much better. In your first formulation, you did not add any Conditioning agents that will stay on the Hair after rinse. The Oils may be helping a little to give the Shine you want but in the end conditioning Agents like the Cetrimonium Chloride is necessary for good and long-lasting Conditioning after the rinse.

Do you want slip during application or overall slip for hair?

If for during application then use some HEC.

If for overall slip then just use 4% BTMS-25, water and preservative. This will make a good conditioner.

Non of your other ingredients will help the slip in anyway.

Okay do you think it’s okay to add the conditioning agents to the cool down phase?

Ehhhh you said non of my other ingredients will help with the slip. Which I disagree. The marshmallow root provides the most sip out of everything. My main concern is that when I add the oil phase, the “slip” is no longer there
