  • Body wash pH at 5.5 without any acid….

Posted by Anonymous on September 7, 2016 at 8:23 pm

    Hello.

Last time i madε some body wash using the following ingredients:
    11% SLeS (texapon n70)
    5% cocobetaine
    3% glycerin
    1% geogard 221
1% parfume oil (lilly of the valley)
    rest water

In the end i add about 2% salt to thicken it and it finally came out lovely…

After i completed the procedure i checked pH and my pHmeter gave me a 5.4 pH without any acid addition… Of course i calibrate my pHmeter 2 times… is this normal or its any other problem with my pHmeter?

I checked it also to other solutions and it gave me true results…

Thank you Belassi for your fast response.
I thought that these surfactants are neutral pH, so i was thinking that this detergent body wash will be at about 6.5-7

I have a lot of different surfactants and in my experience there’s only one in liquid form that doesn’t come at pH 5 - 6 and that’s because it is a pure carboxylic acid and requires neutralisation. And all the ammonium types require to be acidic because if not, you’ll get ammonia being released. If you can find Texapon KD SO3 instead of SLeS I think you will be amazed.

Thank you for that useful information.
Unfortunately its difficult for me to have many options on surfactants which can be available on greek market… My options are limited…

Well your formula looks just fine, be careful to use the same sources all the time or at least match the % solids.

I tried this formula many times. It cleanses well, foam is really good neither too much nor poor of course. It gives a good feeling on skin afterwards and it works on hair too.
But as for hair i may include also some conditioning agents next time.

The pH of cocamidopropyl betaine (5% solution) is 4.5 - 5.5 so your results aren’t surprising.
