    Pun intended….

I’m formulating a body spray and the final product is coming out cloudy. I need clarity on formulation modifications to make it transparent.

    Formula:

    90% Water

    5% Isopropyl Alcohol (70%)

    2% Propylene Glycol

    1.5% Polysorbate 20

    1.5% Crafter’s Choice Fragrance Oil

When using a solubilizer ( the polysorbate) for fragrance, a general recommendation is to use 3-5x of that compared to your fragrance. Are you premixing the polysorbate and fragrance before adding as well?

Will increasing Poly 20 help increase Clarity?

Yes, I’m pre-mixing poly 20, isopropyl alcohol, propylene glycol, and fragrance, then adding water after.

@PhilGeis Should I add phenoxyethanol then? I was using the Alcohol as more of a solubizer

Yes, you should use a preservative.

And be aware that high polysorbate content gives unpleasant soapy feel on the skin

3.5% IPA is not a preservative

How do I obtain a clear formula? What is causing cloudiness?

It’s your fragrance not being properly solubilized. You either increase your polysorbate (as previously adviced) or increase your alcohol. Since when you write you can’t see the original message, I don’t remember if you’re using ethyl or isopropyl alcohol. Use ethyl alcohol (ethanol) preferably, and increase its level (this will give clarity increasing also fragrance potency and helping on your overall preservation).
