    Good Evening Everybody!!

Couple of years ago I prepared a commercial batch of body lotion for my client. Unfortunately seperation occurred during its shelf life. Here is the formula :-

    PHASE A ——-

    BHT 0.15%

    Cetostearyl alcohol 2.08%

    Glyceryl Monosterate ( SE ) 1.38%

    Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate 2.50%

Emulsifying Wax( cetearyl alcohol & Polysorbate 60) 1.62%

    LLP 6%

    CCTG 2%

    Dimethicone 0.50%

    PHASE B

    Water qs to 100%

    EDTA 0.15%

    TEA 0.07%

    PHASE C

    Euxyl pe 9010 1%

    Fragrance. 67%

    Ph adjusted to 6.25

What is wrong with formula ?Kindly share your expert opinion to pinpoint my mistake to avoid seperation in fresh batch.

    Thanks in advance.

What is LLP? How do you adjust your pH? Can you tell more about your manufacturing method?

Yes. LLP is Light Liquid Paraffin

SOP:- Heat water phase & oil phase ingredients separately to 80 deg Celsius.

Add oil phase to water phase under stirring.

Continue stirring( including homogenization for 5 minutes) for 45 min.

      Apply cooling & continue stirring.

Add preservative & fragrance bellow 40 degree celcius.

Adjust the pH with TEA .

Today I made a trial batch with bellow mentioned changes-

      Emulsifying wax 3%

      Cetearyl alcohol - not added

      Glyceryl stearate NSE

      Sodium stearoyl Lactylate 0.5%

      Stearic acid 0.5%

      TEA 0.04%

      carbopol 0.20%

Batch seems to be good in terms of viscosity & appearance. I will update in due course.

Mean while pl share your opinion regarding the problem of seperation so that I shall try another small batch. Thank you very much.

BTW :- You have helped me a lot during my Hair conditioner project. The project was successfully launched. I am much obliged to you.

I’m glad to hear that, we’re all here to help. I never used sodium stearoyl lactylate in an emulsion, but what I’d do is increase your Emulsifying wax 1% more (keeping the Cetearyl alcohol you already have) and perhaps reducing the mineral oil a bit (non polar oils are hard to emulsify).
