  • Bioplastics for Packaging Creams and Lotions?

    What are the types of bioplastics (e.g. polylactic acid [PLA], bio-derived polyethylene, poly-3-hydroxybutyrate, etc.) available on the market to package (bottles, jars, containers, etc.) creams and lotions?

    What types and grades of bioplastics perform similarly or better than petroleum-derived high-density polyethylene (HDPE) packaging in terms of moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR), permeability of oxygen and carbon dioxide, and impact resistance?

    What types of bioplastics would be effective at packaging and maintaining creams and lotions over a two year shelf life?

    Any comments, discussion, opinions or suggestions about the use of bioplastics to package creams and lotions is greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

    I had a quick look into PLA type plastics (on behalf of our marketing team) and couldn’t find one that had more than a 2 year shelf life for the container itself. So unless we wanted to buy containers in small batches and only have a one year shelf life on our products it wasn’t a great option for us.
    I also couldn’t find much information in terms of chemical compatibility with these bioplastics.
