Home Cosmetic Science Talk Formulating Big Brand Theft

When Etsy first started there was a big issue with Urban Outfitters and other companies brazenly stealing the designs of jewelry makers. One day a customer sent me a link to someone who had the same exact product as me. The exact same essential oil blend and ingredients. Are larger brands stealing product ideas more often than we realize?

Umh…..every single cosmetic has the formula listed on the packaging. (LOI)

    What are you asking? 😂

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Move on…. (spoiler alert) best marketer wins in the end anyway.

Just finished listening this week’s episode on The Beauty Brains podcast, and Valerie’s answer to the “dupes” subject sums it up very well: “In every product you’re still using someone else’s work[…]. Also Perry’s answer is true “it’s all a subtle twist to something that’s already been done”. So yeah, in the end it’s all about marketing, as @Graillotion said.

Bottom line? Most of us (all?) do it, at least as a starting point.

Also, if you’re to be fair, “big brand theft” is no different from “small brand theft”. There is a good part in this, though: it makes one push one’s creative boundaries, right?

Yeah, everyone “steals” from everyone else. If you are a small brand and are doing well, a big company wouldn’t hesitate to take your idea and try to make it bigger. Or if the idea is too hard to copy, they’ll just buy your company. This shouldn’t be surprising.

I make $100 month lol. Why would a big name company come to my nothing etsy store?
