Best thickening agents for (Benzoyl) Peroxide containing OIW formulas? List of options
Thickening BP or any peroxide containing formulas can be tricky, because peroxides can in some cases attack the thickeners, thinning the formula and usually decreasing shelf-life. You ideally want less than 10% degradation over 1 year.Vantage recommends
carbomer (not the most stable option, release of benzoic acid results in depolymerization, Bollinger, Journal of Pharmaceutical Science, 1977, vol 5)
magnesium aluminum silicate (mixed with HEC work better than carbomer, but still thinning and degradation is significant)
bentonitePEG-14M
PEG/PPG-4/12 dimethicone
methyl methacrylate/glycol dimethacrylate crosspolymer
lauryl methacrylate/glycol dimethacrylate crosspolymer
hydroxypropyl methylcellulose
acrylates C10-30 alkyl acrylate crosspolymer
cetyl alcohol
cetearyl alcohol
xanthan gum (works, but at high use rates is a bit sticky and drying)
kaolinOther recommended thickeners
Simulgel 600, Acrylamide/Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer & Isohexadecane & Polysorbate 80
Sepigel 305, Polyacrylamide & C13-14 Isoparaffin & Laureth-7 (can be a bit oily feeling)
Scleroitum Gum (works about as well as xanthan gum, bit less drying skin feel).Any other good options here? Should handle 10% alcohol and 10% lipids.
