Best oil for dry curly afro hair
Posted by Rahma on January 15, 2014 at 1:42 pmI have been experimenting with different oils such as olive, coconut, broccoli seed oil etc and haven’t really found a good oil to add to serums/ creams that tackles the above hair type.
Ay ideas what else I could experiment with?Polymergirl replied 11 years, 1 month ago 5 Members · 6 Replies -

Rahma, not to state the obvious, but mineral oil would be best. If you just have to go natural, however, coconut oil (92 mp), meadowfoamseed oil, jojoba oil, and olive oil have been shown to best penetrate the cuticle into the cortex, in decsending order of efficacy. The cortex is where you want to be. Look back into the SCC Journals (since 2004, if I remember) and you’ll find the TRI Princeton study article.

Thank you Chemicalmatt,
I prefer the natural oils, for some reason avocado has reacted better than coconut, olive oil and even jojoba! I am still researching other alternatives.Thank you! -
Try one of these:Grapeseed oil (cheap and useful)Mando oilShea oil (lipex shealight)If you’re using silicones, don’t add more than 30% of oils. It’ll be tacky anyhow. Some non-silicone to use as solvents are C12-15 alkyl benzoate and other esters you find useful. Try mixing them to achieve propper sensorial. The best use of oils in hair care would be to maintain moisture inside. They’ll act as a barrier for water loss with is key for curly hair. Not necessary cortex action to improve curly definition.

Moringa Oil is also a replacement.

Coconut oil penetrates into the cortex, but for some hair types/damaged hair, that can backfire and make a mess. She butter and argan oil are nice ones to try.
