Bacterial Pigments
I am writing a research paper for my microbiology class on bacterial pigments and their application in cosmetic and drug products. My objective is to see what benefits bacterial pigments have in cosmetic products and if they may have the ability to reduce reliance on the use of preservatives. Does anyone have any knowledge in this area or could maybe suggest some good papers to read on this subject? Thanks!

Colorants used in drugs and cosmetics are subject to strict legislation worldwide. Only items which appear on a government controlled list are permitted. This list varies from country to country but, on the whole, most legislatures have similar permitted items.
The chances of getting a new colorant substance, natural or not, approved for cosmetics or drugs are slim to non-existent.

To my knowledge, no bacterial pigments are approved for use in cosmetics or drugs in the US.
However, bacterial processing is used to make cosmetic ingredients. Zemea is one notable success.
