Baby Wash
Posted by anne86sarah on November 28, 2020 at 12:53 amI’m having a problem where my peraling agent (nacar) is not remaining in supension despite using carbopol aqua sf-1.
It’s been in the incubator for about 4 months now. The one at 1% is clearly separating while the one at 2% seems to have minor separation happening.anne86sarah replied 4 years, 4 months ago 3 Members · 6 Replies -

@anne86sarah You need to keep in mind that Carbopol Aqua SF-1 is a low active ingredient (compared to regular powdery Carbopols), so you’ll need more than 2% to suspend/stabilize particles. I think the technical paper from Dow mentions something around 4%; anyway; anyway, I remember a formula where I needed up to 6% to stabilize an emulsified silicone in a shampoo. I personaly prefer Carbopol powders, even though they are more complicated to work with.

I was guided by the supplier of both ingredients that using 3.75% of carbopol aqua sf-1 and 1.5% of nacar would be fine.
It’s difficult to see but i am seeing a layer at the top. I do have vitamin e at 0.1% and aloe vera 0.2% in the formula but i mix it in with polysorbate 20 at 1%. My fragance is water soluble. -
@anne86sarah Carbopol Aqua SF-1 is an ingredient that dissapointed me very much when I first tried it, and the cost to get the final result was too high, compared to powdery Carbopols. In the end, either you increase much more your Carbopol Aqua SF-1, or try with one of the regular Carbopols. And only trust suppliers 50% of what they say. Good luck!

The Carbopol Aqua SF-1 has a few things to watch out for, such as when you add in ingredients like the aloe vera. If you add too much aloe or add it at the wrong point in your formula you will see destabilization.
Have you tried removing the aloe to see how if changes the stability?
-
I have not but the aloe i’m using now is water soluble so i’m hoping for some change.

I scraped of the top layer.
Any thoughts on how it looks? It actually doesn’t look that bad. It looks uniform. Do you agree?
