  • Automotive Cockpit Shine Spray Issue

    I am working on a Car Dashboard Shine formulation based on HEC and Silicone Emulsion. The performance is quite good. However, when sprayed, the shower gun emits a stream of the fluid instead of spraying. I have tried various viscosities with HEC (0.4 - 1.0%) but no success. The other ingredients are Glycerin, TEA, preservative, fragrance and water.

    I shall appreciate if anyone out there could help me out.

    Have you tried it without HEC? Is the HEC added for “cling” on the dashboard surface or for another reason?

    You could also try different spray heads on your bottle.

      Yes, I have tried Xanthan gum and HPMC. They have same results. I sticked to HEC because of ease of processing.
      Yes, HEC is added for thickening and for “clinging” on the dashboard surface.
      Already have tried different spray heads, same results.

      Without thickener, the blend has almost water like viscosity which can easily be sprayed with any spray head.

    agree any polymer is going to give you issues with fine spray unless you get a nozzle to overcome some of that or reduce the level. You could try diutan or gellan gum though- diutan is more shear-thinning than xanthan and you could likely use it at ~60% your xanthan use level. Not sure the pH of a product like this but if you are heating the formulation you could try ~0.1% or less of high acyl gellan (hydrates at ~85C) or use low-acyl gellan gum at a a similar concentration (there are some other processing considerations with that though such as presence of ions).
