  • ascorbic acid and gasses build up

    Hi everyone

I am requested to formulate an ascorbic acid 15% in water. It is a runny serum with no thickener. I have around 30% water and around 38% combined propanediol, dipropylene glycol and Dimethyl isosorbide. pH is around 3.5 .I don’t have any issues with recrystallisation. The issue I have is at 45C after 1 month, in a glass packaging with pump, the formula produces too much gasses that it shoots out upon pumping. 25C samples are perfectly fine. Any idea how to help reduce the gasses build up. TIA

most likely, it is a reaction to the remaining, yet undisclosed, ingredients.

@Herbnerd the undisclosed materials are peptides and extracts (Cica, white tea extract,PALMITOYL HEXAPEPTIDE-12 ) + functional ingredients( EDTA, Na metabisulphite, Tris amino) , preservative (Dermosoft OMP)

Hope that helps make it clearer

In strongly acid solution ascorbic acid decomposes to furfural and carbon dioxide (Herbert et al., 6; Lamden and Harris, ll)

Sodium metabisulfite decomposes in 150 °C of heat releasing toxic gasses when decomposed

Ascorbic acid is heat sensitive, so that might be the cause of your gass formation during stability. Not sure high T conditions are adequate for a heat sensitive material, buy you could try to prevent that with stabilizers, there are many patents attempting to stabilize ascorbic acid.
