Home Cosmetic Science Talk Formulating Arnica montana in skin cream

  • Arnica montana in skin cream

I have recently added arnica to one of my water based skin cream formulations to very good effect when applied to sore muscles and joints. There is a marked pain relief.

My problem is how to calculate the safe level to use in a cosmetic. It seems many people will sell me “100% pure” arnica but this is usually diffused into olive oil, sunflower oil or similar.

Is anyone able to advise me where I may obtain some accurate information on the actual quantity of arnica in a diffused product and therefore the quantity I need to add to achieve a level of 1% total arnica in my skin  cream.

    Many thanks.
    Mac

PS: Sorry if this in in the wrong discussion. I am new here.

    No problem.
First, I advise against the use of olive oil in a skin product. It is inflammatory.
I notice a large number of precautions listed.
    http://www.makingcosmetics.com/Arnica-Extract_p_11.html has a 20% extract available.

Thank you so much for your very prompt reply. I am experimenting with arnica because it really seems to have some therapeutic benefits for old joints and muscles.

We have several “rubs” on the market in Aus that also contain arnica but they all make a terrible mess of clothes and bedding. Hence the reason I am looking to make a “non-greasy” alternative.

    Thanks again
