  • Are all CAPBs created equal?

I know there can be differences in pH, glycerin content and preservative, but by and large looking at the standard 30% active CAPBs can you generally expect pretty similar performance between the different manufacturers or no?

@GeorgeBenson In my experience, there can be few differences that can impact the final result in your product, like the amount of sodium chloride (it can vary considerably, ant NaCl is present in not small quantities), or the residual amount of few starting materials that can be allergenic (dimethylaminopropylamine, amidoamine, and sodium monochloroacetate), which is not an issue if you use 1-2% of CAPB, but can be a larger risk in some sulfate free formulas that use 20% and up of CAPB.

No, not all CAPBs are created equal. But this doesn’t apply just to CAPB. It applies to ALL ingredients.

If you are trying to make a high quality product, you need to qualify every source of any material you use. Just because a formula worked with one source of surfactant or salt or water…that doesn’t mean you can just substitute any other source in there.

Professional organizations would do side-by-side stability and performance testing of any alternative ingredient source used.

Yep, I am with the boys. Ingredients differ significantly.
That is also why you should use Trade names (and/or supplier’s name) on your formula. So manufacture gets the exact material you have prepared your samples with.
