I see Vantage has a long list of non-silicone based film formers: http://www.lipochemicals.com/functions/film-former and Honeywell made a latex out of hydrolyzed corn starch Asensa NFF 11 for use in water based applications, according to them with very similar properties to PVP.

I’m wondering if there are any good (perhaps environmentally friendlier?) options to PVP and its derivatives on the market? Or if PVP is still the gold standard for high staying power.

Curious if you have any experience with this.
