Advise me on my shampoo formulation
Hi Guys, the following is my formulation of a basic shampoo that i want to produce for my Ugandan population targeting low income earners. It doesn’t have cocamidopropyl betaine because I have failed to get it within the country. So my question is, can a shampoo still work perfectly in both lather formation and cleaning properties without the Betaine? And what are your thoughts about this formulation? Do i need to make any adjustments?
Water- 77%
SLES- 15%
Cocamide DEA- 3%
Citric Acid- 0.1%
Sodium chloride- 2%
Glycerine- 2%
Xanthan Gum- 1%
Color- prn
Fragrance- prnthanks in advance

@Sebina actually i never use DEA in my products cause i see it as dangerous ingredient . About betaine i tried doing shampoo without it but product did not work for elactrostatic effect means you will not feel comfort with using only SLES ,all what i said is about my own experience.

@Sebina, It seems to me that you can add more surfactants. The % of SLES and Cocamide-DEA in your formula, is it %w.w? If no, what is the concentration of the material used? Xantham is a bit high. Xanham contributes to not a very pleasant consistency. Consider reducing (try 0.5%, if not enough 0.7%). Sodium chloride looks a bit high too.

Why use a gum when u have salt? That salt might be too high also

@sven, thanks for that. I was thinking of doing away with the gum but needed an extra push to do it. I’m grateful.
@ngarayeva001 i have decided to do away with the gum, then I am going to try another experiment tomorrow with less sodium chloride. And yes its %w/w.
@Fekher, thank you for your feedback. I heard about the same but i havent come across any publications to prove how unsafe it is to use DEA compounds. -
I have tried everywhere but couldnt get Betaine.

I have never used cocamide DEA due to its bad reputation, and also have seen articles mentioning the adverse effects. I have seen it used in concentrations up to 2%. It should increase the pH as well, but on the other hand 0.1% citric acid does not seem enough. What is the pH of your shampoo?
What kind (concentration) of SLES are you using?
As the other people already said, 1% xanthan gum and 2% NaCl is too much. -
@Sebina - DEA compounds as used in cosmetics are not dangerous. The industry moved away from using them in the late 1990’s because of chemical fearmongering. But a review of the toxicology / safety data related to these products can be summed up by the experts…

your formulation is only for shower not for shampoo. you need to use some conditioner for hair like polyquaternium 10 ….
