  • Adding a new ingredient

We are adding sunflower lecithin to an existing product.  Can I add a sticker of the updated ingredients?  There is outside packaging and the actual tube.  Can we update only the outside packaging?  The goal is to use up the remaining packaging until the new packaging arrives with the updated ingredients.

Companies have used stickers like this so I think you can do it.  However, in my opinion you should have the sticker on the actual product not just the outside packaging. The outer packaging could be discarded at some point so you want to make sure people know what’s in the tube.

Or, as I have seen done numerous times, sell out the old product and containers and then reintroduce the product as a “new” product or version. In my opinion, unless the new product was revolutionary, I wouldn’t even try to relabel in any way. This assumes the revised product is already on the market, an assumption I made since packaging exists.
It all comes down to comfort with risk. Mine is pretty low having started in Pharmaceuticals.

In the USA you have up to a year to use your obsolete label copy packaging unless what you added is a certified color or other regulated ingredient.
