Can ACV benefit ph in a product? For example the ph of foaming oats is in the 6 range which is far to high for my skin. Instead of using a ph adjuster, would adding ACV potentially lower the ph and remain stable? I’ve noticed that products Ive made with ACV tend to be below a 5 and sometimes closer to a 4 but I do not know if the addition of ACV has a ph effect.

ACV (Apple cider vinegar) is an acid, specifically Acetic Acid. So yes, it will change the pH of a water based system. It will definitely lower the pH of something higher than pH 6

Search the contents of your skin’s NMF (Natural Moisturizing Factor). This is what YOUR SKIN MAKES…to keep itself moisturized. The list you search should come back something like this:

    1) Free amino acid ≈ 40%

    2) Various ions (chloride, sodium, calcium) ≈ 18.5%

    3) PCA ≈ 12%

    4) Lactic Acid/Lactates ≈ 12%

    5) Sugars, Inorganic acid, peptides ≈ 8.5%

    6) Urea ≈ 7%

    7) Ammonia, Uric acid, glucosamines, creatinine ≈ 1.5%

    8 ) Citrate ≈ .5%

Look at line #4. Ingredients off this list….are generally well tolerated by skin….as they are things it naturally makes. Hence…I would throw my hat in the ring with adjusting pH with lactic acid.

      Would sodium lactate be comparable?

Depending on your start point… you might be surprised to find that sodium lactate will often raise pH. It is what I use as part of my pH up system, when formulating with salicylic acid.

    Is this a cleansing product?

What is the problem with pH 6?

Some of my products like hair serum, feminine soap etc have ACV only because it was uncanny in its effectiveness for my skin personally. But when I began learning about ph, I realized that maybe the acid was what was effective. But all of my products have a ph of well under 5 and the customer reviews are great. Part of my marketing is no unnecessary ingredients so if ACV has a beneficial effect in lowering ph, that’s even better.
