3 Roller Mill
Posted by cindyhr on March 31, 2017 at 5:26 pmI will be purchasing a 3 roller mill for disbursing lipstick and deodorant. Is there a certain type that I need for cosmetics. Rollers come in alloy steel, ceramic aluminum and zirconia ceramic. I am just purchasing a lab version to start with. I am concerned that the product will stay hot enough after going through the mill. Do I need a 3 roll mill that is heated?
I would greatly appreciate any feedback and/or tips you can give me on this.chhavi replied 6 years ago 5 Members · 13 Replies -

The only place i used 3 roll mills (304 or 316 stainless steel) is for bar soaps etc—do not understand why you need for lipsticks/deodorants???

@DRBOB@VERDIENT.BIZ you need them for pigment dispersions if you’re going to mill your own. Otherwise you’ll get poor color performance.

You don’t need heated rollers. You should be dispersing powder into liquids, not waxes. Even if you have to add some wax, you will be ok if you add the hot mixture and mill on room temperature rollers.
I prefer stainless steel rollers, but either ceramic is better than plain steel.
If you have to use a mini mill, these are my favorite small lab mills:

If you can afford it and have the space for it, consider the larger mill.

@Bobzchemist have you seen the Dermamill 100? That one has individually removable rolls for cleaning, which I thought is pretty clever. I’d love to hear your thoughts on it.

It looks very similar to the exakt mills. I’m sure it will work just as well. Being able to remove rollers might be useful.

Thanks Bob and Sunstone! The Dermamill 100 is about half the price of the Torrey so that might be a good one to start with. It does look like clean up is easier with removable rollers.
When our volume increases I can purchase a larger model which will be easier to clean and I’ll know more about them when I am ready for a larger model.

Check and see if you can get an apron like the one below for the Dermamill. The triangular design is much easier to work with.

If you ever have the opportunity, have someone show you how things are milled (and cleaned up) on one of the larger mills. Some things have to be seen to be believed.

Can someone here tell me an idea about the approximate cost of these small 3 roll millers?
