I am formulating a hyaluronic acid serum for sensitive skin. What preservatives are safest to use? My eczema lotion from Cereve contains the basic ingredients in PE 9010 but its a OW emulsion and PE 9010 has low solubility in water.

phenoxy is ok - soluble enough water , well > use levels. Cerave hyaluronic acid serum uses it as PE 9010. Add something for fungi.

    Can’t address eczema concerns.

I sadly don’t know enough about balancing these preservatives which I know is an issue, if you don’t know, don’t formulate. But I’m working on trying to get funding for school. Right now I have PE 9010, GDL and its a high glycerine formula. But only 30% vegetable glycerine. How much GDL do I need if I use 1% PE 9010? Is there anything else I can use for fungus that is safe for eczema?

Use some sodium benzoate and reduce pH.

0.5% (5000 ppm) phenoxy has been my ceiling. What is pH?

GLD? As in GLDA? Why not edta?

I was looking into the same issue a few years ago. @MarkBroussard commented on my post advocating for Euxyl PE 9010. He used it in an eczema suite and it was the best tolerated option. As others mentioned in the post, it isn’t enough on its own to be considered a broad spectrum preservative and should be accompanied by a chelator and something to target fungi.
