    Hi! Lately, I’ve been formulating a leave-in styling cream to use after showering. I created my first formula and loved it—it had a lightweight feel, provided good frizz control, left my hair feeling soft, and had excellent viscosity (I’d say it had a butter-like texture).

    The problem is, when I tried adding argan oil, the formula lost its viscosity. So, I removed the argan oil and attempted to replicate the original formula. However, it seems I had beginner’s luck, as I haven’t been able to recreate that first batch.

    I tried different formulas by adding more cetyl alcohol, and it did help with the viscosity issue. However, I didn’t want to add extra cetyl alcohol because the product is meant for all hair types, and too much of it could weigh down the hair and make straight hair feel greasy.

    I’m looking for any kind of help on how to increase the viscosity of my formula—whether it’s through ingredient recommendations or a different incorporation method—while maintaining a lightweight feel. Also, if you have any idea why I can’t seem to replicate the first formula I made, I’d really appreciate your insights.

    This is the FIRST formula i made

    PHASE A

  • BX-E10 Extract (Aloe Vera, Birch,
    Chamomile, Cucumber, Ginkgo y Ginseng) 1%
  • Glucam P20 (PPG-20 Methyl Glucose
    Ether) 0.1%
  • Panthenol 0.2%
  • Polyquaternium-7 0.5%
  • PHASE B

  • BTMS 50% 4%
  • Cetyl alcohol 1%
  • Plantasens Olive LD (Hydrogenated
    Ethylhexyl Olivate and Hydrogenated Olive Oil) 1%
  • Rice butter 1%
  • Coconut oil 1%
  • Jojoba oil 1%
  • PHASE C

  • Hydrolyzed silk protein 1%
  • Hydrolyzed wheat protein 1%
  • Vitamin E 0.1%
  • Phenoxyethanol 1%
  • Mix Phase A. Mix Phase B until fully homogenized. Add Phase B to really hot Phase A (80 celsius) and stir until combined. Finally, add Phase C to the AB mixture

    *I would like to highlight that you can really only see how thick the formula is until it cools down to room temp.
