Propylene Glycol in a shampoo bar (heh?)

What the heck does the propylene glycol do in this syndet base (OTHER than act as a humectant, which the glycerin would also do)????
Here is the ingredient list range, as given on the New Directions Aromatics web page:
Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate 20-40%
Propylene Glycol 20-40%
Glyceryl Stearate 20-40%
Water 10-20%
Glycerin 10-20%

Having used it, I think that propylene glycol (with the glycerin) is what makes it function as melt and pour.
The end product is actually fairly brittle but soft enough that it wears/melts quickly in use. It doesn’t lather as voluminously as more complex made-from-scratch shampoo bars do. But it is *very* easy to use, and can be used safely on hair without worry about pH correction or causing damage the way true soap can. Good for crafters who do melt and pour and want to add a shampoo bar without having to learn more or experiment with trying to make their own shampoo bars.
