Claims about ceramides in plant oils
Hi, my first post here…
I have found numerous websites and products (some of them extremely well known) claiming that some plant oils contain (phyto) ceramides.
However, when researching scholarly articles on the composition analysis of these oils, they do not seem to contain ceramides of any kind.
I cannot even find a reputable source stating that any of them even contain sphingosine.
I have a feeling that some companies are mistakenly equating the presence of c18-24 fatty acids to ceramides. Otherwise I just can’t find the basis for any of these claims about phyto-ceramides.
There are many oils in the list but I have been looking mainly into the following ones:
- jojoba
- sunflower
- avocado
Please can someone explain how these claims make sense? And secondly is anyone aware of a plant oil that does indeed contain ceramides?

Here are some companies that promote oils with high levels of ceramide. You can access their product sheets with some research.

Thanks @Microformulation I think two of them are lab complexes but yes Oats and some other foods (wheat, rice, corn) also apparently contain ceramides. I have some Oat Lipid already but the manufacturer doesn’t provide analysis.
Do you have any insight into why someone would claim that these oils contain ceramides?

Companies that sell raw materials are marketers. Just like all marketers, you can’t completely rely on the validity of their claims. Do these compounds contain ceramides? Who knows? It’s possible they have some analytical instruments that are able to detect tiny amounts of some material that they call ceramides. Typically, these companies don’t blatantly lie (although some do).
More importantly does the presence of ceramides in these ingredients have any impact on the performance? The answer to that one is easy…No.
The only reason ceramides are even mentioned is so people who use the ingredients can claim their products have ceramides & consumers will then believe the product is somehow special because of it.
It’s really just a marketing ruse that has no impact on product performance.
