Powder foam hand soap | Dry formulation
Hello,
I am trying to formulate powder hand soap that you dissolve in water or pour on your hands while washing hands.
My current basic formulation
about 40% sodium coco sulfate
about 40% sorbitol
about 10% powder Cocamidopropyl betainesome sodium benzoate, gluconlactone, color, perfume etc
The issues are:
1) I would prefer to use something else than powder Cocamidopropyl Betaine to make Sodium Coco Sulfate less irritant. CAPB is expensive and difficult to buy.
Any idea what other substances/surfactants I could use to replace CAPB? Sodium cocoyl isethionate won’t work.
2) This kind of soap is missing some refattining factors. Hands seem kind of dry.
Any idea what I could add/replace? But it would need to be easily dissolved in cold/slightly warm water.
As it is a dry formulation is very difficult to add any refatting agents etc.
Any suggestions would be so helpful and if it workout I would gladly send some money via PayPal as a “thank you” gesture.

you could use Sodium Cocoyl Glycinate or Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate the get it more into a more Sensitve Direction. I would suggest using some Tapioca or Rice Starch ( around 20 -30 % of your formulation) it will help with the skin feel afterward because the slight residue will bind some water which contracts the dry feeling. other than that you can add some Hydrolyzed weet Protein or something similar to improve the skin’s feeling.
other than that you could add around 3 % Betaine. It will reduce irritation and protect the skin from drying out it is rather mild as well. Although it will boost the foam stability of your product hitting 2 targets with one stone.

Betaine sounds like a great idea. I will definitely try it.
The problem with starch or tapioca is that it doesn’t dissolve enough in water. I am considering using it with foam pump, so undissolved parts would be sticking the pump (like SCI)

By increasing betaine you meant: Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Coco Betaine or Betaine? 🙂

I mean betain not Coco Betaine or Cocamidopropylbetain.
I understood your QUestion that you want to make a powder Formulation ? is that wrong if you want to do a Pump ? or do you want a Powder that the Person at home will than dissolve himself in a bigger Quantity in Water and fill in a refill Container?

Yes, it would be best to achieve the option of powder refillis that you can dissolve at home in tap water.
I aim around 5-6ph and also using MGDA as a chelating agent 🙂

Well, then you are right adding that much starch will be problematic for a refill product.
You need to add some conservation system to the system in a high concentration. it is always very difficult to formulate home tap water product refills.
While your powder itself will not be problematic the mixture with water will be very much problematic with microbes. Several others, that know a lot more about Microbes than I do, already mentioned in other threads. it will be very difficult to formulate that. especially if you want it to function as 2 products (use pure or use Dilutet as a refill) in one of the two you will either have a too-high concentration which will lead to unpleasant skin feel or you have a too-low concentration of Antimicrobiotic active substances.
Depending on the regulations and the Limitations that you have you could use propyl and Methylparaben as Conservation systems.
for the mildness, I will think about it and come back maybe someone else has a good idea for that kind of product. I think Beatin will be a good idea anyway but maybe something else will be good.

It would prefer to have refills that dissolve in water. I was thinking about the mix of sodium benzoate and gluconolactone (about 0,3% in total), but it could be too little. I have heard that sodium benzoate might be harsh for the skin. Maybe I would add also Phenoxyethanol.
I will definitely try Betaine, but if you have any other suggestions that would be so great! 🙂

Remember you will need to add enough preservative to your powder to be effective once it is diluted. Assuming that most of your customers will be diluting with tap water so you will need a robust preservative to counteract that.

I have tried using Betaine (maybe not the best source), but I think it didn’t help. Even more, the foam got worse 🙁
The seller claimed it’s like 96%+ Betaine. I will try to get it from another source.
Plus this Betaine I got has a funny, kind of unpleasant smell. Do you think it’s ok?
Maybe those 4% are making it don’t work properly.

The smell of betaine is kind of unpleasant yes. if it did not help you can still try to use the Powders I mentioned in my first post. Sodium Cocoyl Glycinate or Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate form very fine pored foams

Try to check powdered face washes. They often use clays and starches
