Upcoming regulation on fullerenes in the EU
I was interested in making a product containing C60/C70 fullerenes or fullerenols since published research shows a range of benefits. These include an increase in rodent lifespans between 38-100%, 172 times the antioxidant power of Vitamin C, some protection from UVA/UVB induced cellular damage, increases in memory and cognition, and benefits for Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, and osteoporosis.
However, its benefits need to be considered alongside its potential to act under certain conditions as an extreme oxidant, producing oxygen radicals that result in 100% cell death of keratinocytes at even ppb concentrations. The degree of functionalization, residual solvents, method of application…etc determine whether C60/C70 and its derivatives are beneficial or harmful. For example, topical application followed by exposure to sunlight has been reported to be extremely toxic to the skin.
Due to the growing popularity of C60/C70 and its derivatives in products for consumption and topical application, the SCCS has started an investigation. A preliminary review recognized their genotoxicity potential, and based on my own review of the literature, especially for topical application, I expect a ban of C60/C70, and potentially its derivatives for all skincare products.
