Good morning! I have a client that is interested in having 1 or 2 products “microbiome” certified. Would you know of a company in the U.S. that is providing this service?

Open to insights on what you think of this type of certification.

    thank you

Hi, as every single human has a unique and individual microbiome , this “microbiome certification” statement literally doesn’t even make sense.

Either the client does not understand skin physiology and microbiology, and/or does not understand what a skin microbiome actually is, or both of the above.

This is a nonexistent impossibility to certify a product for skin microbiome.

Microbiomes can be good and bad, beneficial or problematic, etc. All unique.

Also, biomes can contain a lot of resident, yet undesirable negative microbes, such as yeasts, fungi, bacteria, lipid splitting microbes such as those causing Malasezzia, etc.

As you can easily see, there is no way to even put a narrow definition on the skin biome to “certify it”, let alone to identify it for marketing purposes.

    Hope this info helps.

I have to agree. We don’t know enough about the microbiome to certify something as good or bad. But that just means anyone can make up any standard they like and grant a “certification”

…so in essence, this is a certification that only this company provides, but isn’t necessarily an industry standard. Is it safe to say they are creating their own standard for certification? https://www.mymicrobiome.info/en/microbiome-friendly-certified-products-catalogue

      Yes, that’s their business model.

      1. Create a microbiome standard that they think is believable.

      2. Solicit businesses to get them to agree to be certified.

      3. Get enough companies to pay them to get certified so they can start claiming that it is an “industry standard”

      4. Repeat

But no regulators or large companies in the industry recognize them as an industry standard. Anyone can create a standard today that is just as valid as theirs.

This is also the case for something like the COSMOS natural standard. They just made that up. It’s just that they have convinced enough companies to follow the standard that (at least raw material companies) that it means something in the industry.

As in MyMicrobiome and its imaginary “standards”? Largely meaningless - and nothing regarding the anticipated health beauty benefit claim that is also fictional.

Looking at the claimed methods - either the MyMicrobome folks have made dramatic improvements in microbiology - or they’ll full of it.
