Silicones and Actives
Hi, this is a general question for the community that I have and thank you in advance for all your input!Do silicones (i.e., dimethicone, cyclmethicone) in an emulsion prevent any actives with a molecular weight of <500 daltons penetrate deep into skin due to the barrier it forms? Would it be necessary to have actives in a liposomal or micro emulsion/nano emulsion to get past this barrier? Or is this a non-issue? Thanks! -

If the ingredient is better soluble in silicone oils than in sin, then you have a ‘problem’ (as long as you formulate cosmetics and not pharmaceuticals, it doesn’t really matter).

Pharma, the actives are water soluble so it sounds like the barrier created by the silicone would not interfere with absorption of the actives into the skin. Thanks for your input!
