  • Heating temperature for BTMS-50?

Posted by GeorgeBenson on November 4, 2022 at 5:42 am

I have been working with Montanov 202 and its 85 degree requirement for so long now that I forget what temperature “normal” emulsifiers typically need to reach before mixing. Is 70 usually high enough for BTMS-50 or should I go for 75?

If you don’t want to bother looking up the mfg specs…. The basic formula is typically to heat it 5C past when the last ingredient is fully melted.

Ok thanks thats a good rule to go by.

I get the btms-50 from lotioncrafter but im not sure who the manufacturer is. And the formulation guidelines on lotioncrafter for that particular ingredient are rather sparse.

BTMS-50 takes close to 90C to melt. BTMS-80 is around 100C, which is the reason I prefer BTMS-25 and adjust for cetyl alcohol.

Hmmm thats interesting, i have been using it a lot the past few days and BTMS-50 seems to melt for me at around 70C.

From the Evonik’s formulations guidelines, i’ve noticed that the heating temperature has a correlation with the percentage of the water. If the formula is for cream then the melting temperature is lower, if we make a lotion with high water content, then the melting temperature is higher. I generally heat the oil phase to 85-90 degrees in a microwave oven, just to be sure that everything is melted properly.
