  • Adding aluminum to APDO systems

    Does anyone know if there’s a specific way to add these ingredients to the formulation during the manufacturing process? The technical materials I found only says about its use and that the pH should be around 3.5 - 4.5
    I know it’s something a little basic, but I couldn’t find anything from the suppliers that could help. The only detail is that they say to avoid heat above 48 ºC… so they’re added during the thermolabile phase. But I need to just put them in the system and voilà? No special cautions, incompatibilities or recommendations?

    Here’s a list of samples I received to test, if helps:

    - REACH 301 L (Aluminum Sesquichlorohydrate)
    - REZAL 36 GP (Aluminium Zirconium Tetrachlorohydrex Gly)
    - REZAL 67 (Aluminum Zirconium Pentachlorohydrate)
    - MYCRO DRY 323 (Aluminum Chlorohydrate)

    (Sorry, to be clear I’m not asking for a formula, I’ll make one myself later. But I want to know more about the handling of these ingredients first to decide how to proceed then)

    What type of antiperspirant are you making? Solid/ stick, roll on / emulsion, paste, spray? The manufacturing process will depend on what you are making.
    We make a roll on antiperspirant (emulsion type) with Aluminium Zirconium Tetrachlorohydrex gly and add slowly it to the cool down phase with moderate speed stirring at less than 40C.
    I know that the Aluminium Zirconium Tetrachlorohydrex gly is not suitable for spray type products.
    We just use standard safety precautions (e.g. gloves and eye protection) when handling.

    I think I’ll make one type of each to test (less aerosol).

    I was in doubt because I didn’t find much information about the compound itself, usually the ingredients come with some indicatives such as “add in phase X” or “incompatible with strong bases”.

    All of these are pretty robust. My only advice is to be sure you have a rheological additive to maintain suspension during filling (hot fill sticks) and shelf life (roll-on lotions.) In the sticks, those hectorite clays do the job. Lotions are a bit trickier but hydrated silica or Veegum can work.
