  • Pre-loading silica with a volatile susbstance.

I have been working on an emulsified deodorant cream.  The actives are nailed (Thanks to two brilliant chemists!)…. Just trying to add some powders to absorb some moisture, as the product does not contain aluminum.  Came across a vague, but seemingly wonderful idea from one of the manufacturers.

As background….I have tried….some native starchs (rice and arrowroot).  Not impressive.

MCC (micro crystalline cellulose)… a bit more impressed than with the native starches.

Silica… (Aerosil 200).  A little hard on the emulsion….still working on the right place to add it… I am thinking….post emulsion…below 50C.  Still have some confusion if I want a hydrophilic or hydrophobic silica for a moisture desiccant in a deodorant.

A blend of MCC and Silica…. I am liking this the best so far.

Waiting on: Distarch phosphate (CORN PO4 PH “B“ from Agrana).  Not yet tested.

So, the intriguing concept was based on Silica shells, which differ from other types of silica, as they seem to be hollow.  It was suggested that they be saturated with a volatile ingredient (I am thinking D5), then when they enter the emulsion, they are already saturated…and not absorbing other ingredients.  Therefore, once they arrive at the destination….in this case…the armpit….they will shed their volatile companion, the D5….and be ready to go to work….in this case….on sweat!

So, in theory…..I am just elated….but that might be just my naivety.  Can this really work?  Or is this just wishful thinking…. will the silica/D5 paste once introduced to the emulsion….simply part ways….and find a companion of their choice…which will make the silica less available….come work time at the pits?

Can this concept of pre-loading with a volatile….also be used on the MCC…to make it more available for sweat in the armpit?

What about for the distach phosphate….when I get that?

I could also preload them with 190 proof ethyl alcohol, or Isoamyl laurate….open to ideas.  I suppose the volatile liquid…will also determine which phase it would be included in….or maybe silica always should be added post emulsion….and possible post emulsion…below 50C?
