Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (27% x 70%)
Hi there!
I would like to know your experience with Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) . Which one do you guys tend to use more? Do you prefer the 27% active or 70% active version?
I tend to use SLES 27%, but I’m starting to think that maybe SLES 70% is more viable, since it’s allegadly cheaper. Do you guys have experience using the 70% version? It is difficult to work with it? (When compared to the 27% version).
I really appreciate the help that I get from this forum! It’s really great to know the experience of other chemists 🙂

We only sles, both concentrations 27% and 70%. I’m not so sure about the prices you get, but for the quantity we buy, the price for sles is way too cheap to be considered.
If you are using small lab equipments, I’d suggest to go for 27%. It will make the process easier and faster. Sles 70% needs time and temperature to be dissolved in water. If you force the dissolving process, you will have to deal with foam. -
If you are manufacturer and don’t have homogenizer, don’t use 70%. If you have homogenizer go for 70%.

If you decide to go with the 70%, it is not easy to get into solution. Plan on it taking at least 5 hours in production, and yes, foam will be a problem.

Some consider the 70% to be self preserving.

In 5 hours production, you just mix it just like the 27% sles?

Yes, we did. You have to be careful adding it, as it will lump up badly. Then just mix slow and steady until it’s all in. We didn’t try to homogenize, worrying over foaming.
