  • Kathon cg+ DMDM hydantoin as preservative for shampoo

    Posted by Abdullah on January 20, 2022 at 10:35 am

    If i use kathon cg(1.5% MIT/MCIT) with DMDM hydantoin or formalin as shampoo preservative, how much of each preservative should i use?

    According to data about Lonzaserve® PC from lonza, a blend of <0.1% DMDM hydantoin+ <1ppm MIT/MCIT can preservative shampoo.
    This would be my go to preservative blend if this is true.

    MCIT/MIT and DMDM Hydantoin have the same target segment.  Don’t see to much reason to use both - but still limited vs fungi.  But think Unilever has some shampoos with both.

    Lonzaserve PC would certainly be a novel combination.

    @PhilGeis - I heard they did this because the company they bought (Helene Curtis) had a resident microbial biofilm in the Suave shampoo filling lines which required Kathon to kill.

    Both are on some suave labels.

    @PhilGeis  @Perry

    1. this is the composition of Lonzaserve PC. Is this 71% of 55% DMDM hydantoin solution or 71% DMDM hydantoin solid?

    What i want to know is how much total formaldehyde is in this mixture.

    2. What percentage of Lonzaserve PC would you recommend in a Shampoo? In one file they recommend v0.05-0.2%. in another file they recommended 0.25-0.5%.

    3. If i add the same amount of MIT/MCIT and formaldehyde (in form of DMDM hydantoin or formalin) as Lonzaserve PC, would it function the same as Lonzaserve PC?

    No.

    With MCIT (at 5ppm) - you don’t need phenoxyethanol. Of these, phenoxyethanol would be the least preferred.
