  • Does cooking oil need antioxidant?

Posted by Abdullah on December 12, 2021 at 2:25 am

I want to add about 3% cooking oil(palm stearin or sunflower oir) to one of my lotions that also has 4% petrolatum. These oils are stable when used for cooking even for years. My question is, do i need to add antioxidants with them if used in cosmetic lotion at 3≥?

@Adullah, I have never used recycled oils to make lotions, but I have had a problem using rancid oils in soap making. As per my personal experience, if I use rancid oils in my soaps, they become rancid within a month, they turn orange-brown, loose their scent and no matter how much EDTA I used nothing resolves the problem because you cannot reverse rancidity. Because of this experience, I only order my vegetable oils from reputable suppliers who provide quality control documents with peroxide values and expiration dates.
I think the same would apply to lotion.
    Best,

@Syl thanks for sharing your experience.

I am going for cooking oils because i think all oils are almost the same in terms of functionality in lotion. And cooking oil is much cheaper.

Also as they are for eating and cooking, they may be stabilized in some way to prevent rancidity. This is my assumption.
