I’ve looked at many Datasheets now and it seems there are limitations.
Also found this:
However, personally, I would only use it in wash off formulas. And definitely not on body leave-on products. But that’s my opinion.
-
Yes, they are safe if used within proper limits. The only reason it is avoided is for marketing considerations.
-
I’ve just read my comment and I didn’t write what I thought I did. I wanted to say : there are not many limitations. And that is why I’ve included the pic Sorry for the confusion.

The problem you’re going to have with DMDM is resistance from the consumer and distrubtion channels.
-
@Abdullah … well, if that’s the market environment in which you sell product, then you don’t have the issue of consumer/retailer channel resistance, so just use it at safe levels.

@MarkBroussard thanks
I currently use 0.9% phenoxyethanol +0.1% caprylyl Glycol +0.2% EDTA in shampoo. The only problem is that it reduces the viscosity.
What percentage of active DMDM hydantoin in combination with what preservative do you recommend?I have phenoxyethanol, caprylyl Glycol, glyceryl Caprylate, caprylhydroxamic acid and Piroctone Olamine.
-
I don’t use DMDM, so I can’t advise you there. Given your list, I assume you’re making a Shampoo … you might try Phenoxyethanol + Caprylhydroxamic Acid … I don’t think that combination would reduce the viscosity of your shampoo.

We used 55% DMDM Hydantoin at 0.2% (so 0.11% active) in a shampoo
-
@MarkBroussard thanks
Interestingly when i use glyceryl Caprylate in shampoo it increases the viscosity dramatically.I will try this blend and see what happens
-
@Perry 0.2% DMDM hydantoin alone or with another preservative?
-
We had used it with Methylparaben but eventually just used the DMDM Hydantoin alone. Although we also had Disodium EDTA as a chelating agent and kept pH around 5.0
-
@Perry thanks
What percentage of methyl Paraben with it?A quick search in Google, vo5 is the only shampoo that is using DMDM hydantoin alone.
-
Methyl - 0.2%.
In theory, Gram negatives are the risk for shampoos so DMDM Hydantoin alone with EDTA would seem to be enough. In practice, combination with another increases protection vs. Gram negative adaptation and is a much better system. -
Yes, when I first started we used a combination of DMDM Hydantoin and Methylparaben in our shampoos. It was a cost savings project that demonstrated we didn’t need the methylparaben based on our manufacturing conditions.
