    Hi,
I’m trying to formulate a moisturizing spray for the hair and I don’t know if I’m thinking down the right lane. I have used the following formula for several days and I’m noticing that my hair has taken on a strange texture (kinda gummy when wet) and I can’t describe what it feels like when dry. Kinda like it has a film on it or something. Anyway can someone help guide me as to what I have overlooked or what I have done wrong?

    Formula is as follows:
    Purified water 69.45%
    Aloe Vera powder- 200x .35%
    Gluconolactone and Sodium Benzoate 1.75%
    Herbal extract blend 7.5%
    1,3-Propanediol 5.45%
Glycine Betaine - Beet Sugar extract 3%
    Hyaluronic acid - 1% solution 10%
    Chia seed extract 2%
    Fragrance oil .5%

    Herbal blend consists of:
    Horsetail leaf extract
    Sage leaf extract
    Nettle leaf extract
    Rosemary leaf extract
    Chamomile flower extract
    Lavender flower extract

If I did my calculations correctly, the total amount of sodium hyaluronate would be .1% since the solution was 1% or am I thinking about that all wrong?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

How did you manage to get that high a level of HYA to mist-spray I wonder? Must be the lowest MW grade I guess? Anyhow, I’d put my money on that and the betaine. When I read “film” I think “polymer” and that HYA is the only member present. Glycine betaine absorbs very strongly to keratin, therefore the “gummy”.

Thank you, ChemicalMatt for your reply.

To answer your questions, the spray was not much of a mist but the solution did spray out - more of a direct stream kinda. I do not know what grade of Sodium Hyaluronate was used as the 1% solution was pre-mixed and purchased from Formulator Sample Shop. It was a bit of a gel-like solution. The Glycine Betaine that I have was purchased from Ingredients To Die For and I have been able to use it successfully in a cleansing conditioner formulation but it is a rinse off type of product. The mist spray is a leave-in product.

If I were to remove the HYA and Glycine Betaine, would the aloe vera juice be enough to provide a moisturizing effect? What about using Panthenol or Hydroxypropyltrimonium Honey?

pH not withstanding, that is very poor preservation.

    Hi PhilGeis.

Is the type of preservative not good or the amount is not enough? Any advice is welcome.
