Hi there, I’m wondering if someone can give me some help on finding an alternative product to use other than GlucoTain Plus (INCI: Capryloyl/Caproyl Methyl Glucamide (and) Lauroyl/Myristoyl Methyl Glucamide).

I wanted to make up this Aloe & Olive Creamy Handwash but the Glucotain Plus is really expensive so the final product costs $10.00 for 500g!

    The recipe is

    45.2% Distilled Water
    10.5% SCI Chips
    10% Aloe Vera Gel
    3% Glycerine PF
    21% Glucotain Plus
    3% Oliv-Ester
    3% Glucotain SENSE
    2% Polyquat 7
    0.3% Liquid Germall Plus
    1% Essential oils or fragrance
    1% Shampoo Ultra Thick Liquid
    Citric Acid to adjust

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks
    Mel

I am currently playing with Plantapon TF from BASF (Decyl Glucoside (and) Polyglyceryl-10 Caprylate/Caprate (and) Coco-Glucoside (and) Glyceryl Oleate)

Using around 15-20%. It already contains Glyceryl Oleate and it also contains a solubilizer for your EO or fragrance. It has a very nice hand feel after washing.

The downside is that it is difficult to thicken. I’ve tried Xantham Gum from 0.3 - 1.0 % and 0.5% is the upper limit in terms of keeping from developing that jelly texture. Unfortunately it was not thick enough.

I am waiting on some Carbopol® Aqua SF-1 Polymer which is suppose to be compatible with surfactants (15 - 23% active).

Have you made a sample of your formulation yet? If so, I am wondering how you managed to melt 10.5% SCI in H20?

No I haven’t made a sample yet.  I was just costing and wondering whether a hand soap was worth the effort for $10.00 to make LOL!

If you were to use sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate instead of SCI, the product is said to be easily thickened with salt or betaine.

If it’s for you, possibly. If for sale, no way. Personal experience. When customers can buy at retail a 250mL pump bottle of soap for $1, that’s what they will buy.

@melrobinson2000 There is a luxury brand I like and their hand wash is $40 for 500ml. It’s just SLES and Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine with 3-4 essential oils and a PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil.

If you wanna sell this wash, using the above as a reference you could get $4 on the dollar if you can get it to sell for that much (they’re probably getting 30-40 on the dollar)… but it sounds a bit hard unless you already have a strong position in a market.

If you have never attempted this formulation, perhaps its time to go back to the drawing board.

SCI chips are not so fun to melt. The chips can also contain Stearic Acid depending on the manufacturer. The fine powder is easier to work with if you have regular non industrial equipment. 8% SCI dissolves in H20 with fairly high heat alongside 10% CAPB. Adding 10-12% SLSa (which dissolves well) will create a fairly viscous clear solution which is suitable for a hand wash. It falls into the “creamy sulfate free hand wash” category.

It will be expensive but nowhere near the $10 cost you are looking at with your formulation. Also, 1% EO seems high, I am making hand soaps at around 0.5% and it seems to be on the high side.
