  • Using Willowherb in Cream/Lotion Formulation?

Posted by spadirect on March 9, 2020 at 6:47 pm

What has been your experience using willowherb (Epilobium angustifolium flower/leaf/stem extract) in any type of formulation?  Is it easy to use in formulations?

Some suppliers’ marketing materials suggest that willowherb has skin soothing, anti-inflammatory and anti-allergenic properties.

Any suggestions, comments, opinions or discussion concerning the use of the botanical willowherb in formulations is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

In my opinion, if you are using standard humectants, occlusive agents, and emollients you will see no benefit from using willowherb. This is a “claims” ingredient that helps tell a story but doesn’t have a consumer noticeable effect.

Traditionally, willowherb is used for different ailments such as prostate hyperplasia but there’s nothing in there which would back up any of these. Some antibacterial constituents have been found/isolated but there are probably more plants containing something which shows a somewhat activity in vitro than there are plants which really contain zip.
