    Hello everyone,
I’m new to the forum and actually just started the Chemists Corner formulation course. I’ve been trying to formulate a 2 in 1 product that will be used for beards. The product cannot be too harsh to strip the beard of all its oils and leave the face feeling itchy. This is what I’ve tried formulating, It was nice for a few weeks then I noticed that it appeared to separate. The active matter for the surfactants (not including cetrimonium chloride) was between 10-11%.

    Here are the ingredients:
    Water Stage
    Water 49.5%
    Glycerin 4%
    Cetrimonium Chloride 2%
    Polyquat 7 1%
    Panthenol 1%
    Coco Betaine 10%
    Caprylyl/Caprylyl Glucoside 7%
    Oil Stage
    BTMS 50 3%
    Cetearyl alcohol 3%
    Carrier oil 5%
    Decyl Glucoside 8%
    Glycol Distearate 4%
    Cool Down
    Oat Protein 2%
    Germall plus .5%
Thank you all in advance for your assistance.

What’s the final pH of the formula?

I apologize, I used lactic acid and the PH was 5.0.

hmm well that’s a good start- i thought maybe the coco betaine would be an issue if your pH was higher.  How high are you heating things to?
my second thought is maybe just not enough emulsifier. I’ve usually seen the pearl around 2%, is 4% totally necessary?

I heated until the oil stage was melted. Just thinking about I poured the water into the oil, however, I think it should have been the other way around? I proceeded to stick Blend for a little while to make sure everything was incorporated.

Do you think I should raise the cetearyl and BTMS? I’ll lower the distearate to 2%. Anything else stand out or something needs to be changed?
    thanks!!
