Donations for Chemists Corner
Posted by Dr Catherine Pratt on February 15, 2019 at 12:25 amHi all,I don’t know if this has been raised before, but there is a Donation Button that you cannot miss and monies that are donated go towards Perry being able to keep up the costs of running Chemists Corner.I just wanted to say that Chemists Corner has helped me out immensely and I imagine all the other chemists, training chemists and visitors to the site to merely ask questions all for free!Chemists Corner is probably the best site for Cosmetic Chemists to be able to talk to other chemists and visitors all over the world.Perry has maintained the no2 or 3 position organically on google for years. So just saying ‘Perry paid it forward’ and now its time for all of us to do the same!!What have you guys gained from being on the site and do you think it warrants a donation?Christopher replied 5 years, 9 months ago 12 Members · 25 Replies -

Hello Catherine, do you have shares in Chemcorner hahahhahahhhah
Just kidding.
yes it is great place, with great people …. mostly -
No but I was actually an original member when the site started and I remember Bob chemist said something funny so I joined. Then babies came along, but now I am back because there is not another site that is as good? What do you think?
-
Good points, Catherine. ChemistsCorner is an essential site for cosmetic chemists and beginners alike.
Speaking of which … BobZ disappeared. I hope he is doing well, but noticed that he no longer posts and he always had useful insights.
-
@MarkBroussard yeah I have noticed that few senior members have suddenly stopped posting. Including @johnb as well, hope they all are doing well.
-
Yes hopefully they are making so much money now that they are sitting on a boat in Monaco!
-
Can I ask that when you make a donation, you say something about chemists corner and what it has done for you???So have you guys on this thread donated yet? What do you guys think should be a donation standard amount?I believe it should be in the hundreds at least?Any thoughts on this one?
-
Why don’t you donate a million? At least!
I’m sorry, but I don’t think it’s any business of yours what amount of money members will donate. Nice action by making people feel bad that they can’t give at least a hundred like you did.

Despite my apparent non-appearance on these pages, I do look in on a regular basis – almost daily, in fact.
I stopped posting to Chemists Corner because I felt that I was regularly being unfairly attacked by people who had a total misunderstanding of what I was trying to put across and I thought that it’s just not worth my while in continuing.
Since that time, I’ve observed a very marked deterioration in the quality of the questions posed and the quality of the questioners themselves.
A significant proportion of questions could easily be answered by the most basic of Internet searches and/or a perusal of manufacturers literature (almost the entirety of which is available online). This indicates to me a fundamental laziness and, quite frankly, anyone with that approach to their work (or hobby) is not worth pursuing.
Coupled with that are those that have no clue about what they are doing but expect an instant response to what is, very often, just basic general knowledge. Then there are those who request a similar instant response to a question that is at the ‘cutting edge’ of research and the answers are only known to those carrying out that research.
Then there are the perennial questions on the lines of how to neutralise LABSA coupled with modified dishwashing liquid formulations. I’ll tell you this for free: you can never hope to market a dishwashing liquid that can compete with the well known brands so, in essence, you are wasting your time. Worrying about trivialities such as the product not being completely clear or that its colour is not quite as was desired regularly take precedence over whether the product actually does as it is supposed to do - and that is to clean dishes.
That’s only a small sample of my recent site irritants.
In answer to Dr Catherine Pratt
It is not a boat in Monaco that I have bought but a villa in Le Bar-sur-Loup on the French Riviera https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Bar-sur-Loup
This was not from the proceeds of being a cosmetic chemist but from royalties paid to me from licencing patents I own concerned with the preservation of wood. These are licenced to a Canadian company and the products are used almost worldwide.
This may not seem very profitable at first glance but, just think of the number of telegraph poles and the like there are in the world – billions! There are numerous other wood preservation applications as well.

@johnb I couldn’t agree more. I lurk a great deal and will weigh-in occasionally when I feel that a teachable moment or a useful thread begins. I however will not weigh-in on the majority due to the exact issues which you so concisely listed.

Hello everyone,
To start I would like to thanks to Perry for this terrific space. I follow this forum more than two years now and it is not a lie that I join to read it everyday. I have learned lots of things here and also I experiment a lot. Even thought I can’t answer to any question because my level is not good enough for that, because I only make basic things and because and the most important, there is someone always here that give very good and professional advises. So I would like to thank all you the things you share and teach for everyone for free.
To continue with the thread, I have to say I saw the donate button long time ago and I have also to say that from that moment, is in my mind to donate something when it will be possible for me. If I haven’t do it before is because I could’t. Anyway I think that the amount to donate or even the fact to donate or not, is very personal, I wish everyone could do it because the space deserve it, but I don’t think anyone can push to someone to do it.
I like to read you @johnb and I like to see you are fine and enjoying in a beautiful place. I have also learned a lot from the things you have shared and to say the truth, I miss your answers in the forum, but I understand you have personal reasons for not doing it anymore.
Best regards to all you, Sylvie.

It’s good to know about your well being @johnb and I couldn’t agree more with what you have summed up above. Sometimes you know people through the writings and posts and you just want to know if they are doing fine. @Bobzchemist used to post regularly as well and few of the members here have contributed in a manner that we feel lucky to have gone through those posts.
Stay well and stay blessed. And a big thanks to @Perry for an initiative that is unparalleled and is almost like an institution itself. -
One thing that might be useful is if the professional chemists’ names were in a different colored text as opposed to the same color as hobbyists/homecrafters so one could better gauge how informed/experienced is the poster who is replying to a question. If you have been on here a while, you pretty much know who all the professional chemists are, but if you are a new member that may not be the case and it could help one sift through the responses with a better filter as to the knowledge base of those offering advice or answering questions.

If there was a sub-group on here that was credentialed Chemists where only these members could post, it would be great. I joined this group early on and it was useful for technical advice. Now it is primarily crafters and hobbyists,

Interesting reading….
@johnb I personally prefer Bagnols en foret, out of topic LOL.to go back on one comment, some of us and I experienced it, are pushing the game of “being unfairly attacked” by sending personal messages!!!! Shamed “he” can not be blocked LOL.
Having said that I like the place… and “sorry” I have a caustic sense of humor…. nothing wrong for a Chemist!
Thanks a LOT Perry

@Microformulation, if I recall correctly, Perry (and others) did start a companion site that was for professionals only and had a small annual fee. Perhaps @Perry can provide more information on that site.

You know what? I am just trying to get people talking and really I am talking to the chemists that get loads of free jobs. I am not talking about beginners, I think you all know that. I think that $100 by the chemists is not unreasonable at all. You would pay thousand for an advertising site and as I said this site is usually around 1 or 2 organically on google. And Doreen thank you for being supportive, the amount of ingredients that you buy from the formulas you talk about would add up to that amount easily.BTW I didn’t say you had to, I was just trying to get a reaction to start talking. Perry might like to hear your stories and how this site has personally helped them. You have totally not understood what I was trying to do?? thanks for doing that! its just stupid!!

I certainly would participate.

My observation is that hobbyists
and crafters don’t stay here too long unless they are very serious. The reason
is the hostility of the professionals. I also noticed that sometimes crafters
might know something that professionals don’t simply because we learn
differently (and yes those are fools who make discoveries).I agree that it is a good idea to mark people
depending on their background. That, however, requires changing the functionality of the site and is time-consuming, which leads to the very subject
of the discussion: donations are highly welcomed.Another
suggestion is to charge an annual subscription
fee. I even suggest charging
professionals less to reduce their frustration. That will assure that those who don’t
know what xantham gum is don’t post here, which
will be quite sad though. -
Thee Points:
The button says Donate … the voluntary giving of monies for a good cause. Good point that all professional chemists on the site should donate to Perry’s cause.
The site is open to anyone who wants to join. It is quite simple to just ignore threads that you aren’t interested in and comment only on those where you are interested and have something to offer. The purpose is to share and gain knowledge.
If you aren’t absolutely certain of the advice you are giving, do some research to confirm before you answer or don’t answer. It really isn’t helpful to post incorrect information or if you are not absolutely certain, just say so. Again, the purpose is to share and gain knowledge, not speculation.

@”Dr Catherine Pratt”
“…and really I am talking to the chemists that get loads of free jobs”
Then why do you send me of all members a private message? I’m surprised to see that you’ve actually even read one of my threads, the few ingredients that I use in my tiny 150 gram batches. If you’ve read those a bit better, you could’ve known that I’m not a chemist, but a ‘simple’ homecrafter.
And apparently not worthy of the space on this forum.
Ever heard of a chemist using a stick blender? Or a chemist saving money to get challenge tests done on a few formulas?About Chemist Corner. It’s indisputable that Perry has done and is doing a magnificent job with this CC forum and everything else, the courses, the CC website, The Beauty Brains website. I have nothing but the utmost respect for him. But what I donate is really none of your business. Neither am I interested in the donations you make.

This thread is working against its purpose and if anything is deterring people from donating.
