  • Natural Deodorant Essential Oil Question

    Hey All,

I have a question around adding scent into a natural deodorant.  I’m a little concerned about temperature and the phase at which I should be adding scent.  I will only be using essential oils and do not want to damage the essential oils at too high of a temperature.  Any suggestions around phasing or resources around essential oil temperature ranges would be helpful.

Currently I am following the below process:

Phase A : Add oils and ingredients that require melting to double boiler.  Max temperature is around 76C.

Phase B : Cool liquid from Phase A to around 68C and add powders in.  Mix powders while temperature drops to around 48C.

Phase C : Pour mixture at 48C into containers and cool immediately at fridge temperature.

    Much thanks!

I would be more worried about damaging the consumer with the essential oils.

@jsmith14 actually for essential oils theire are a lot of photosensibles and thermosensibles ones . So what can i say to you not all essential oils have same sensibility so you must make research for your oils used and you must becarefull also at the maximum dose allowded of essential oil cause in high dose it can be soo harmfull.

Thank you all for the response! Apologies but I should have been more clear, I meant I will only be using essential oils for scent.  There are many other ingredients in the deodorant bar.  My main concern is at what phase and temperature to add the oils in. Thank you!

48°C is still too hot, this will evaporate the head notes for sure and affect the EO. Add it at the lowest possible. Of course it will depend on the oil and the amount of volatile compounds, you will have to experiment.

You won’t be able to pour much below 40C, so drop in the EO’s between 45 and 42C, stir and pour.

@jsmith14, using or not using essential oils is a personal choice of a formulator. However, I agree with the opinions expressed above. Essential oils are either phototoxic or cytotoxic or both. Please read this thread, there are some good resources shared by the experts.

Post a new discussion @haroon. You just can’t post anywhere and expect people to respond. Read the rules to have a better understanding about this platform. And don’t forget to post what and how much you added in that formula.

Thank you all for your responses.  I appreciate both the help with temperature and the resources around EOs.  I’ll round out my reading a bit more on the potential downsides of EOs.

    Much thanks,

    Hey All,

I’ve added the EOs at the end of my phasing.  I kept them at around .8% of my formula but still feel the scent is not strong enough.  Would it make sense to add jojoba oil with the EOs at the end of my phasing?  Meaning I add both EO and jojoba oil while the mixture is cooling and right before pouring into containers.  I figured jojoba could help hold the scent better.  Thoughts?

    Much thanks!

Generally, EOs should be added at the end of your processing. As far as jojoba oil, that may or may not work. You have to experiment. Personally, I’d use a solubilizer like Polysorbate but maybe jojoba oil will work.

I agree it is best to add the EO at the last step but since the phase will be hot it will evaporate the important top notes of the oil unless, if you can, cover the phase so that the EO does not lose its top note and settles back in.  Important to have an airtight cover and chill the phase.  Jojoba oil is a carrier oil but it helps to prevent the EO from losing the top notes at elevated temperatures so in some way it might help but you will be using more of oil to get the fragrance.

Thanks, Perry and AmitKaria!  I appreciate the input, it sounds like I’m not getting advice against adding Jojoba oil at the EO phase.  Looks like I’ll just have to experiment from here.
