  • Product creates a feeling of tightness on skin.

I have formulated a couple of creams (O/W emulsions) and serums for oily skin with the consistency and all the qualities that I like. The problem is that when i apply them they create immediately a feeling of tightness on my skin.
I have used as emulsifier Olivem 1000. I haven’t measure their pH.

    What can be the problem?

    Thank you in advance.

You haven’t provided enough information for anyone to give a good answer.

If you want serious responses, do the following when asking questions.

    1.  List all your ingredients
    2.  List the amount of your ingredients

Sorry for the lack of information.

    The ingredients are as follows:
Water, Glycerine, Xanthan gum, Salix alba liquid extract, Calendula officinalis glycolic extract, Lavandula angustifoglia powder extract, Spirulina platensis alga, Olivem 1000, Helianthus annuus oil, Jojoba oil, Benzoic acid, Tocopherol.

I don’t think Xanthan gum (or most gums) will leave a pleasant feel on the skin. That’s the most likely culprit IMO.

If you insist on using it, use it at way less than 1%, something like 0.1%.
Did you list the ingredients in descending order? How much Xanthan gum are you using?

Emulsifiers are supposed to leave a decently thick cream with oils.
Likely its thickness was diluted with too much watery extracts.
    So, try:
1 Making a formulation with just emulsifier + water + oils (no extracts) to see if it gets decently thick so you can take out the Xanthan gum.
2 rising oils+emulsifiers and lowering the water/extracts fraction.
3 knock-off study to see which extract is killing viscosity.

I haven’t listed the ingredients in descending order, they are just listed randomly.

    I have used 0.2% xanthan gum and 2 % glycerine. I have used 7% of Olivem 1000.
Anyway, I will follow your advice and will make a formulation without xanthan gum.

    Thank you for your response.

If the gum doesn’t make any difference you might want to reconsider the amount of Salix Alba extract you use.

Salix Alba (Willow) Extract is likely to contain a high quantity of polyphenols, tannins, and salicylate derivatives all of which may be astringing (tightening) depending on which part of the plant (tree) the extract was made from.
