lactic acid recrystillization
We are trying to figure out why we are getting crystals in our gel mask. We ran tests that increased Lactic Acid - Sodium Lactate from 5%LA - 0.5% SL to 9% LA - 2.5% SL and that latter test did not form crystals after 12hours at room temperature. The former began forming crystals after 12 hours.
Wondering if the ratio of Lactic Acid to Sodium Lactate is the culprit here and are if this ratio is crucail for the stability of LA.
Any clues would help. Thanks.

I don’t think the crystalization is from lactic acid sodium lactate. As they are highly soluble. Do you put any other acids? Would be good to know all ingredients.

You can use sepimax zen to thicken formula with acids and salts. It works at very low pH. You can make a clear gel.

Thank you. After first dissolving the sodium lactate in heat phase; and making the hyaluronic acid gel separately then adding last, there are no more crystals forming even after weeks.

Waited some time to see if crytals would form. Opened our two test samples and observed long crystal rods in the large 100g samples BUT our 30g samples did not have any crystals. Same formula, same batch! So strange.
We are using these acids in the formula (outside of the Lactic Acid):
Buckwheat Honey (not an acid but i tasted the rods and they were sweet), Lemon Peel Ferment, papaya Fruit Ferment Extract, Fruit Extract, Citrus Limon (Lemon) Fruit Extract

we think it may be Leucidal (natural perservative) that may be causing crystal rods, as it has crystallized in it’s container. Anyone ever use this product?

Yes, but I’ve never had any issues with crystallization. I only use this preservative when specifically requested by the client.
