Thixin R
Hello again!
Does anyone have some tips for using Thixin R? I’ve read all the manufacturers info and recommendations, which seem straight forward enough, however on searching different formulations I’ve read a whole lot of other methods of incorporation than what the manufacturer suggests.
I’m using it in a fairly standard castor based creme soft lipstick formulation, and my first thought was to make a master batch and drop it in on cooling (with mixing)… I want to use it for feathering control. Other formulations I have read suggest high shear mixing for less time and at much higher temps than recommended.
If anyone has some advice that would help I would be most grateful, I dont want to keep blowing batches, and having never used it before I’m not sure what to expect from it other than obvious seeding.

I haven’t used the material but for people who are curious, here is a link to the raw material from Elementis. Thixin R. Since I like to speak in terms of the INCI name, it is called Trihydroxystearin

I’ve used Thixin R in a couple of formulations following the manufacturer’s recommended formulation procedures. I would recommend you stick with the manufacturer’s protocol unless there is some reason you need to incorporate it at a higher temperature. They created those formulation guidelines for a reason.

Mixing at higher than recommended temps causes all sorts of texture problems. Follow the recommended procedure, unless you don’t have access to high shear mixers.
It is possible to activate thixcin in a 3-roll mill, but it’s a tedious job.

Fantastic, thanks so much for the advice. Yes I like to stick to the manufacturers guides, I couldnt understand why it was in quite a few formulations and being heated up to 85deg c.
Hopefully my shear mixer will be enough to activate it.
Apologies Perry, I should have said the INCI name also, I get carried away with shorthand at times.
