Mango Kernel Processing
Posted by Anonymous on May 10, 2016 at 5:57 amI have managed to get my hands on a large quantity of mango kernels and was wondering if anyone knew a good process to purify it?

Purify it to what end? If you want to grind them and use them as exfoliants, probably boiling them for a few hours would work.
If you’re trying to make some kind of extract, crushing them and then boiling/extracting in hot water might be a good first step also. After that, it gets complicated.

I checked, and there’s actually a bunch of information on how to do this already on the internet. Basically, you have to get the kernel out of the shell, then either cold-press or solvent-extract the oil from the kernel, which is about 14-20% oil.
How large a scale are you planning?

GuestMay 11, 2016 at 11:53 pmright now i’m in the process of formulating my moisturizers so I’ve been buying it already processed but long term I have a farm in Jamaica that has a beefarm, mangos and other goodies. So if i can figure out the process then I can produce my own butter. I don’t really care about processing it into an oil at this point.

Perhaps you should take a look at how the Ghanaian co-ops produce organic shea butter.

I’m feeling helpful, so I will pass on some information that I found on the web. Not too hard, just search for mango butter manufacturing process.
As far as I can tell, Mango Butter is the high-melt-point fraction of Mango Kernel Extract. Mango Oil is what’s left behind after you refine the Mango Butter out of the extract. So, saying you want the butter and not the oil is using the wrong terminology. Perhaps you meant that you want the extract?
Wikipedia has some useful information: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mango_oil
