Home Cosmetic Science Talk Formulating General Cetrimonium Chloride in shampoos

  • Cetrimonium Chloride in shampoos

At first I saw Cetrimonium Chloride being used in shampoos from Kao. I thought it was incompatible with surfactants used in shampoos, but now I am seeing that Unilever and Loréal started to used this in its shampoos as well.

    An example:

    Dove Regenerate Nourishment Shampoo

Water, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Glycol Distearate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Chloride, Glycerin, Dimethiconol, Fragrance, Sodium Benzoate, Citric Acid, Dimethicone, Gluconolactone, Acrylates/Beheneth-25 Methacrylate Copolymer, Styrene/Acrylates Copolymer, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Amodimethicone, Sodium Sulfate, Trehalose, TEA-Dodecylbenzenesulfonate, Disodium EDTA, PEG-45M, Dipropylene Glycol, Hydrolyzed Keratin, C10-40 Isoalkylamidopropylethyldimonium Ethosulfate, Cetrimonium Chloride, Carrageenan, PPG-9, DMDM Hydantoin, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, Mica (CI 77019), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891)

Is it really works in a formular with SLS, SLES etc?

Update: in its newest formulas I see Kao removed the Cetrimonium Chloride. Now they have Stearoxypropyl Dimethylamine (I thought it was incompatible as well):

    KAO ASIANCE INNER RICH SHAMPOO

Water (Aqua), Ammonium Laureth Sulfate, Alcohol, Steareth-6, Glycol Distearate, Lauryl Hydroxysultaine, PPG-17, Isodecyl Glyceryl Ether, Lauric Acid, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Malic Acid, Cocamide MEA, Fragrance (Parfum), Dimethicone, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Benzyl Alcohol, Laureth-4, Potassium Hydroxide, Polyquaternium-7, Phosphoric Acid, Bis-Cetearyl Amodimethicone, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Laureth-23, Caramel, Lanolin Acid, Stearoxypropyl Dimethylamine, Glycyl Glycine, PPG-3 Caprylyl Ether, Trisodium EDTA, Salicylic Acid, Butylene Glycol, Stearyl Alcohol, Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil, Camellia Japonica Seed Oil, Rosa Centifolia Flower Water, BHT, Sodium Hydroxide, Punica Granatum Extract, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus Extract, Hydrolyzed Conchiolin Protein, Sodium Benzoate, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Phenoxyethanol

Interesting. Kao is one of our suppliers, I didn’t know they also made care products.

Belassi: Kao is also some of the largest cosmetic companies of the world. They own several skincare and haircare brands, from popular to very luxury ones, specially in Japan.

In Europe they have Sensai (competes with La Prairie for instance), Suqqu, RMK, Molton Brown etc.

Wow. They sure have some super nice surfactants. The one I buy is 98% active content.

Cetrimonium Chloride is often blended with Amodimethicone to get it to go into solutions.  For example Dow Corning 949 has cetrimonium chloride in it. This can be used in shampoos.

Also these are pearlized/opaque shampoos where certain mild incompatibilities remain well hidden, the cationics in question are listed post fragrance and this could be anything between 0.01 (0.001 for that matter) to below 1%. Whatever small amount of complexation takes place between the opposite charges gets properly dispersed in the formulation and you don’t see anything out of place.

    Correct???
