    Hello my dear friends
I’m working on a hair mask formulation with the below
    formula:

    Cetearyl alcohol 7.5%

    Stearamidopropyl dimethylamine 3.5%
    polyester-4 10%
    DMDM hydantoin 0.6%
    Water To 100
    Lactic
    acid q.s to pH: 5-5.5.
My problem is about the viscosity of the finished product, when the emulsion is formed, it had no viscosity so I used Lactic acid to
adjust the pH and also thicken the product due to it’s hygroscopic effect but
it used so much acid to be in the pH range and it became very viscous,Reducing
the amount of the emulsifier(Cetearyl alcohol) to 5 % didn’t help too. Can you please suggest me a solution.

with Stearamidopropyl dimethylamine you need cathionic ppolymer like cosmedia ultragel 300 fROM basf  or cosmedia triple c.

and you can add dimethicone 1%.

Another option you might want to consider is to reduce or remove Polyester-4. I had a hair mask that is almost similar to this one, without polyester-4.

For viscosity you might try incorporating some Hydroxyethylcellulose at around 1%
