Product drying out, clogging nozzle
Hey everyone,
I created a hand soap surfactant with:
60% Coconut Oil
30% Olive Oil
10% Lauric Acid
Saponified using Potassium Hydroxide (KOH)
And then diluted into water at a 1:1 ratio
And then thickened with an acryclic copolymer (Lubrizol aqua SF-1) - to help suspend my particles of pumice sand to create a scrub.
And finally add some Bentonite to help stabilize the solution
The product works great and I have no complaints, it just tends to dry out if I leave my jar/bottle cap open. Therefore clogging my nozzle on my squeeze container. Now I know the simple solution would be to just close the lid, but sometimes the consumer isn’t as smart as the next person…. Is there anything I can add to help keep the water from drying out of this solution? Thanks in advance!

You need to add an antievaporant.

my prime suspect is the bentonite, as it can absorb a lot of water - how much is in the formula?

Try some humectants - glycerin, sorbitol, etc. replacing some of the water.
This will inevitably raise your cost, so you will need to balance the increased cost against the messier container. For most situations, lower cost trumps (potentially) happier consumers.
