Yeah I’ve noticed that! I’ve been experimenting with different levels is oil binding agents verses different particle sizes. From what I can tell the ultra fine particle sizes have to have a higher oil content. Thanks for letting me know your thoughts!

How do you feel about using emulsifying wax in a lotion?

Thanks Belassi! I felt a bit weird about the idea of applying salt to the face like that but gotta ask to learn more~

Ill have to locate a Lab locally and see what the typically costs.

Do you have any vegetable derived preservatives you know of, that you could suggest I learn more about?

I figured out what was happened. The arrowroot I use as an additive was absorbing and preventing the full evaporation of the liquid. I made a separate formula for pressing and have since then started dry pressing using oil that’s been “cut” (like butter into flour)
Grape seed is what I prefer to use because it disperses better.

I am super excited to be getting this 1/2 ton powder press this coming week. Dry pressing will be so much easier

That’s kinda what Ive done so far. I make my additive batch with rose talc and other ingredients and added the oil binder to that. I have a small portable coffee grinder I’ve been using and it’s helped alot. I’m wondering if my mini food processor would be efficient. What do you think a good oil to powder ration is? I do it in drops currently, about 4-5 per 1gram powder.

Hey Bob, so I want to increase the oil binder in the loose powder, what’s the best way to grind it in so ita not clumpy? Can I use a marble mortar and pestle?

Yes I have and it seems to help when I’m pressing the powders into a compact form but as far as with the loose I haven’t figured a way to disperse it without making it clumpy. I’m sure a Muller would be my save all but I’ve yet to get the funds for that.

Well even if I use more pigment it just increases the amount but when you drag the product over the skin it goes on more sheer than the actual color. I’m trying to figure out how to get it to apply in a thicker manner I suppose

I’m also searching for a cosmetic chemist who can do small batch liquid lipsticks.

Would a shake mixer work as a stand in for an overhead mixer? I have an all metal one that would traditionally be used for making ice cream shakes.

Bob I figured I’d just ask you this instead of starting a new thread.
How do I get rid of bubbles in a lotion?
I made an eyeshadow primer using aloe vera gel (a premade that has a preservative in it) and I mix in arrow root powder and natural clay/kaolin clay. When I hand mix it it gets bubbles. Should I use the mini coffee grinder I have or try a blender? What causes the bubbles to form?

Thank you Bob! You’re such a help! I’ve been studying for weeks to get myself comfortable with terminology and everything and this forum (you included) has been so great for pointing me in the right direction

This information is wonderful! I appreciate all the responses. I’m also curious on how you can identify the bark between other powders. It’s been difficult for me to find suppliers that even have more than a stock photo of some of the ingredients I’ve been looking for.

So why do people always advertise paraben free as some badge of wholeness? If parabans are not bad for you why do they have a bad rep?

Thank you so much for the help! I’m going to look into those additives.

I’d definetly prefer the preservative be natural If it could be.
