Sodium benzoate’s activity is very low at pH above 5 and liquid hand soaps usually have pH ranging from 5.5-7.5.

Why is there a need to combine CMIT with sodium benzoate and EDTA ???

Is Biocrol WS1 alone at the dosage of 0.15% w/v not sufficient to inhibit microbiological growth in rinse off products ???

Which microbiological tests are recommended for the tap water which I am using ???

I have come across total plate count test but there may be other more reliable and accurate tests. Please provide your valuable insight on this issue.

@ozgirl the raw materials are surfactants like sodium laureth sulfate, cocamidopropyl betaine and linear alkylbenzene sulfonic acid; rheology modifiers like sodium chloride, fragrances, colorants.

@EVchem currently I am using tap water and Proxel 106 as a preservative.

Is water the primary bacterial source ???
Is a robust preservation system not sufficient to prevent microbiological growth ???

I tried to thicken this system in laboratory by adding pine oil to the neutralized LABSA but could not achieve the desired thickening. There are hardly any patents regarding such a product but this type of gel cleaner has a good market for sales. There were a few home care products specialist on this forum but I am unsure of their activity on this forum now. If anyone has any patent related to such a product please share.

    Kind regards,

I am trying to emulate Hibicet or Savlon Hospital Concentrate. There are excipients as well but I am unsure of their composition in the final product. Isopropyl alcohol, Terpineol, Liquid deodoriser, Benzyl benzoate, d-Gluconolactone, Sodium Hydroxide and Purified water. There must be some patent disclosing something about this product.

I am trying to formulate a skin cleanser with Chlorhexidine Gluconate as the active ingredient. Since CHG is cationic in nature I need surfactants which are either non-ionic, amphoteric or cationic in nature. I am aiming for stable foam coupled with antibacterial efficacy and moderate viscosity (around 1000 cps).
There is a product by Ecolab called Hydrex surgical scrub which is what I am trying to emulate.

There are many products under the category of Alkyl Polyglucosides and Alkyl amine oxides. I am in search of something which is used in products like skin cleanser. I found BASF’s Plantaren series of Alkyl Polyglucosides. Furthermore are Alkylamine Oxide, Dialkyl amine Oxide and Alkyl dimethylamine Oxide all same ???

ASM stands for active surfactant matter. It is very important to have correct and sufficient proportion of primary and secondary surfactants in your formulation. I once formulated a soap which resulted in sticky feeling after washing hands and the soap still remained on my palms even after rigorously rinsing hands with water.

Some colors fade under the influence of fragrance. Is there any other way to identify the effect of a particular fragrance on any formulation quickly ???

I was informed by a fragrance manufacturer that I cannot use any fragrance for fabric softeners. Fabric softeners are cationic in nature and hence require special fragrances.

If I use Chlorhexidine Gluconate 20% solution I will have to use 5 times the quantity to achieve the same active percentage. Alcohol hand rubs have around 0.5 % w/v of CHG. If I use 20% solution I will have to use it at 2.5 % w/v instead.

CHG solution on addition to Alcohol renders the solution milky and subsequent addition of water again makes the solution clear. Will the pure CHG in powdered form dissolve if I use it at 0.5% w/v in hydroalcoholic solution ???

I came across a few studies by European researchers challenging the essentiality of CHG in hand rubs.

    https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5598061/#__ffn_sectitle

Is it worth adding CHG to the product or omission of CHG does not affect the antiseptic performance ???

Chlorhexidine Gluconate is available as a powder as well. Can we use the powder or it is advisable to use solution only ???

Secondly, is Chlorhexidine Gluconate Solution available only as 20% solution or there are other concentrations available ???
